How do we find the language to sustain our inner selves and build an inner world in dialogue with the world around us? Studio 3 NYC presents Sustaining Self, an exhibition featuring 11 New York-based artists that explores the complex relationship one has with themselves. Using artistic expressions across a range of mediums, the artists interrogate questions of building and maintaining identity, authenticity, autonomy, and self-reflection. Whether through photography, painted portraits, or abstract expressions, each work in Sustaining Self frames a moment of self-actualization, self-care, self-understanding, or reflection on the love or pain of maintaining our identities and staying true to our passions in an ever-changing world. The artists’ creative process in these moments encourages a conversation between our inner experience of self and how we represent that ineffable identity beyond our selves in connection to our communities and the wider world. Wherever they find inspiration or provocation, each artist is ultimately their own muse, and seeks to share their unique inner world with us through their works.
